Introduction to Epilepsy Awareness | E-Learning
Epilepsy is the most common serious neurological condition in the UK. Knowing what to do during a seizure matters.
Around 600,000 people in the UK are living with epilepsy. Most seizures are not life-threatening, but they can be frightening to witness and require a calm, informed response. For those working in care settings, schools, sports environments or any other context where they may witness a seizure, understanding what is happening, what the different types of seizure look like, and how to respond appropriately is genuinely valuable knowledge.
This CPD-approved online course provides a clear, accessible overview of epilepsy: what it is, how it is diagnosed, the range of seizure types a person may experience, and the practical steps to take when someone has a seizure. It is designed primarily for those working in care settings, but is equally useful for first aiders, teachers, sports coaches and anyone who wants to be better prepared.
What You Will Learn
- What epilepsy is, and how it differs from a single, isolated seizure
- How epilepsy is diagnosed, including the investigations and assessments involved
- The different types of seizure, including tonic-clonic seizures, absence seizures, focal seizures and others, and how each presents
- How the brain is affected during a seizure, and what this explains about the person’s behaviour and recovery
- Common seizure triggers, including sleep deprivation, stress, alcohol, illness, flashing lights and specific sensory stimuli
- What to do when someone has a seizure: ensuring their safety, timing the seizure, and when to call an ambulance
- What not to do during a seizure, and why certain common instincts are counterproductive or dangerous
- Post-ictal recovery: what to expect after a seizure and how to support the person during recovery
- Seizure management plans and how to use them in a care or educational setting
Note on first aid training: this course goes into considerably more depth on epilepsy than is possible in a standard first aid course. It works well as a companion to EFAW or FAW training, providing the context that first aid syllabuses can only briefly address.
