Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) — Face-to-Face

The qualification most businesses need, delivered the way it should be.

Under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, every employer must ensure adequate first aid provision is in place for their employees. For most low-hazard workplaces, such as offices, shops, libraries and studios, the Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification meets that requirement.

EFAW is a one-day, mostly practical course. By the end of it, delegates should leave not just certificated, but genuinely confident that they can act effectively in the first minutes of a real emergency, before the ambulance arrives, when the outcome is most likely to change.

That last point is what many courses miss. A tick-box approach to first aid training produces delegates who pass an exam and forget the skills within weeks. Our approach uses small groups, real-world instructor experience and applied scenario learning. It is designed to produce first aiders who actually act.

Certificate choice: this course can be certified by Chris Garland Training or by a QNUK Ofqual-regulated Awarding Organisation (an additional fee of £12.50). Both are fully valid for employer compliance purposes. Some organisations and national governing bodies specify Ofqual certification in their requirements, so check before you book if you are unsure.

This course is also available as a blended learning course, combining 2 hours of online pre-learning with a classroom assessment day.

What You Will Learn

This course is built on the HSE’s EFAW syllabus (Document L74), updated in line with UK Resuscitation Council guidelines and guidance from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh:

  • Health and safety legislation relating to first aid, covering employer and first aider duties
  • The role and responsibilities of a workplace first aider
  • Managing an incident, including scene safety, assessment and prioritisation
  • Preventing cross-infection during first aid
  • Recording incidents and first aid actions
  • First aid kit contents and how to use them
  • How to assess an emergency situation, so that you act safely, promptly and effectively
  • The recovery position for an unresponsive casualty who is breathing
  • CPR and AED use for an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing
  • The difference between a heart attack and a cardiac arrest
  • Choking in adults
  • Wounds and bleeding, including catastrophic haemorrhage control and tourniquet application
  • Minor injuries, including cuts, grazes, bruises, splinters and minor burns
  • Seizures
  • Medical shock

A note on tourniquets: we teach tourniquet application as part of this course. It is included in the HSE’s recommended first aid syllabus (L74), and it is a critical skill for managing catastrophic haemorrhage. Not all providers include it. We do, because the guidance says we should.

Certain corporate entities and national governing bodies require certificates to be formally issued by an Ofqual-regulated Awarding Organisation to meet strict internal compliance policies.

We offer both Chris Garland Training certified options and fully accredited courses. The primary operational difference is the external registration fee; selecting an Ofqual-regulated certificate incurs an additional charge of £12.50 per person.

Please note that several of our highly specialized courses are completely bespoke to Chris Garland Training and are not tied to an external framework. If your selected course falls into this category, this will be clearly outlined within your final quotation.
