First Aid Annual Skills Update | E-Learning
The HSE strongly recommends annual refresher training. This is the fastest way to do it.
First aid knowledge fades. Research consistently shows that practical skills, including CPR quality and tourniquet application, decline significantly within months of initial training, particularly when they have not been used. The Health and Safety Executive strongly recommends that all trained first aiders undertake annual refresher training between their three-year certificate renewals, precisely for this reason.
This online Annual Skills Update is the most time-efficient way to meet that recommendation. It takes a few hours to complete and refreshes core first aid knowledge, bringing you up to date with any changes in guidance since your last qualification. It does not replace a full practical requalification course. What it does is keep your knowledge current and your confidence higher in the years between courses.
What the Update Covers
- CPR review: current UK Resuscitation Council guidance on technique, compression rate and depth, and rescue breathing
- AED use: key points and any guideline updates
- Managing the unresponsive casualty: primary survey and recovery position
- Choking response for adults and children
- Catastrophic bleed management and tourniquet application: technique review
- Common medical emergencies: updated recognition and response for conditions including heart attack, stroke, anaphylaxis, asthma, hypoglycaemia and seizures
- Any significant guideline changes since your last first aid qualification

Gareth Milton –
My First Aid at Work certificate expired 2 years ago. Is the online Annual Skills Update course right for me to obtain a new certificate?
ChrisGarland –
Hi Gareth.
Short answer; no. This course is for those who are still in date and want to brush up on their skills. If you’re certificate (either for a 1 day emergency first aid at work, or 3 day first aid at work) expired 2 years ago, you will need to re-do a full first aid course again. Note that the Health and Safety Executive deem that you shouldn’t be regarded as being a first aider in your workplace if your certificate is more than one month out of date.
Regards
Chris
