Ladder and Step Ladder User Safety Refresher Training
A typical working day, refreshed from start to finish.
If your job involves using ladders or step ladders, your employer has a legal duty to ensure you are trained to do so safely. However, training given once, some years ago, does not always stay current in practice. Habits drift, shortcuts creep in, and the reasoning behind each step of safe ladder use can fade, even when the basic actions remain.
This 2-hour practical refresher is structured around a typical working day using ladders. This means the safety principles are refreshed in the context where they are actually applied, not as abstract rules, but as decisions you make at each stage of a real task.
A typical session covers:
Your manager gives you a task to complete. You assess the task and the likely hazards, with reference to the relevant legislation. You select an appropriate ladder or step ladder from the stores, then load it ready for transport, considering vehicle overhangs and when signage is required. At the site, you speak to the client about the job, identify any affected access routes, and set up your safety barriers. You give the ladder a pre-use check, set it up, secure it, and begin to climb.
This structure, covering task, selection, transport, site set-up, pre-use check and safe climbing, is the backbone of the refresher. Each stage gives an opportunity to check and correct technique.
