Evacuation Sledge Operator Training Course
Evacuation sledges and ski-sheets are essential safety tools in multi-storey care facilities, schools, and hospitals. Specifically, they are critical where standard evacuation chairs are impractical. Where this equipment is installed, staff operator training is a statutory legal requirement under PUWER 1998 regulations. This practical course ensures your team can deploy these life-safety assets safely and confidently during an emergency evacuation.
Statutory Compliance & Official Guidance
Official UK Government guidance states that evacuation equipment training must include three core elements. Specifically, it must cover disability awareness, disability evacuation etiquette, and practical manual handling techniques. Many generic courses skip these elements. However, our bespoke curriculum incorporates all three to guarantee your absolute legal compliance.
This face-to-face course gives up to 12 candidates the skill to check and deploy evacuation equipment. For example, your operators will learn how to visually evaluate sledge fabrics, buckles, and securing straps before an emergency arises. Training your team ensures your workplace meets its legal duty of care under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
Comprehensive Course Syllabus
This streamlined operator programme focuses entirely on frontline safety mechanics, removing any complex trainer profiles or teaching requirements:
- Legal Frameworks & Guidance: Reviewing employer duties under PUWER 1998, fire safety orders, and building exit strategies.
- Disability & Evacuation Etiquette: Understanding physical dependencies, managing clear communication, protecting passenger dignity, and reducing casualty panic.
- Bed-to-Floor Transfer Mechanics: Mastering manual handling techniques to get an evacuee safely from a hospital bed and onto the floor. This includes specific handling for ski-sheets (fitted permanently under standard mattresses), AirFlow type mattress systems, and standard evacuation sledges where the casualty must be safely rolled into position.
- Safe Manual Handling on Stairs: Mastering practical sliding mechanics down stairs to ensure operator safety and passenger protection.
- Pre-Use Equipment Inspections: Spotting material wear and tear, evaluating deployment readiness, and understanding annual maintenance requirements.
Attendance Continuity & Late Arrival Policy
Strict health and safety compliance standards enforce uncompromising contact-time criteria. Candidates must absorb every theoretical safety module to participate in the practical staircase drills. Therefore, if an attendee arrives more than 15 minutes late for the morning start time, they will be turned away. Consequently, they will forfeit their training placement and all paid booking fees.
Classroom Schedule & Timings
This face-to-face course delivers 5 guided learning hours of practical instruction alongside an integrated lunch break. The training block runs promptly from 9:00am to 3:00pm over one single day. We integrate short comfort breaks throughout the hours to ensure your candidates remain fresh and focused during the physical staircase drills.
Assessment & Testing Criteria
We evaluate candidates across two distinct components to verify their practical handling competence:
- Multiple-Choice Theory Paper: Candidates complete a short theory exam at the end of the session. You must score a minimum of 70% correct answers to pass.
- Continuous Practical Observation: Our instructor evaluates your hands-on mechanics during the bed transfers and staircase drills. Operators must demonstrate safe, controlled descents and pre-use checks. This handling component requires a strict 100% pass mark.
Course Prerequisites & Physical Guidelines
Operating evacuation sledges requires a reasonable baseline of physical fitness and strength. Please ensure all candidates meet these parameters before booking:
- Age & Language: Attendees must be at least 18 years old to earn an operator certificate. In addition, candidates need a functional level of English (we recommend a GCSE baseline) to take the written paper.
- Physical Fitness Limits: This course involves strenuous physical work on stairs and floor transfers. Consequently, it is not suitable for individuals with active back problems, shoulder injuries, hernias, or mobility limitations.
- Required Attire: All candidates must wear comfortable clothing (such as trousers) and flat, closed-toe shoes with non-slip soles. High heels, open sandals, or skirts will result in immediate exclusion from practical tracks due to slip hazards.
