Evacuation Chair Train the Trainer Course
Most evacuation chair training providers train your staff on only one or two pieces of kit. However, our comprehensive programme covers six different models. An in-house instructor who only understands a single device is not equipped to conduct a meaningful equipment risk assessment, advise on building exit routes, or train staff across a mixed estate. This course produces genuinely competent internal trainers who understand the wider marketplace.
Hands-On Training Across 6 Different Models
To ensure your in-house instructors have a thorough understanding of the equipment market, this course provides hands-on practice with six different types of evacuation chairs. Crucially, this includes the industry-standard Evac+Chair 300H and the versatile Ibex Transeat.
These varied devices are widely deployed across modern commercial, educational, and care settings. Furthermore, they feature unique load capacities, deployment limits, and mechanical handling requirements. Training your team on multiple variations ensures your internal trainers can confidently audit, manage, and teach others to use the equipment across your entire estate.
Comprehensive Course Syllabus
This full-day programme balances core technical knowledge with practical training delivery skills to ensure your trainers are fully equipped to teach others:
- Legal Frameworks & Guidance: Understanding employer duties under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, PUWER 1998 and the Equality Act 2010.
- Evacuation Schemas: Developing and managing General and Generic Emergency Evacuation Plans (GEEP) alongside Personalised Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEP).
- Disability & Evacuation Etiquette: Managing communication, protecting patient dignity, and reassuring individuals during a high-stress emergency building evacuation.
- Safe Manual Handling on Stairs: Practical movement, descent controls, and lifting techniques to ensure both operator safety and passenger protection down different staircase types.
- Equipment Inspections: Conducting pre-use safety checks, identifying mechanical wear and tear, and understanding annual maintenance log requirements.
- Training Delivery Skills: Applying adult learning principles, structuring practical skills sessions, and managing learners with varying physical abilities.
- Assessments & Record Keeping: Learning how to conduct operator competency checks and maintain proper internal training logs.
Attendance Continuity & Late Arrival Policy
To meet safety and compliance standards, candidates must complete every single module of the course. Therefore, if an attendee arrives more than 15 minutes late for the morning start time, they will be turned away. Consequently, they will forfeit their place and all paid booking fees.
Classroom Schedule & Timings
This intensive face-to-face course takes a full day, running promptly from 9:00am to 5:00pm (providing 6 guided learning hours). We distribute regular short breaks throughout the day to keep candidates fresh and focused during the practical handling sessions.
Assessment & Certification Metrics
We evaluate potential trainers across distinct components to verify their skills and protect your organisational liability:
- Continuous Practical Observation: Our instructor assesses your hands-on techniques across the session. Attendees must accurately demonstrate safe deployment, flawless pre-use inspections, and successful staircase descents. This component requires a strict 100% operational pass mark.
- Theory Paper: Candidates must complete a summative multiple-choice question paper containing 20 targeted questions, scoring a minimum of 70% correct answers to pass.
- Practical Teaching Demonstration: Candidates will deliver a short micro-teaching session during the course to demonstrate their equipment handling and coaching skills.
Following successful completion, we issue an official Evacuation Chair Train the Trainer certificate via Chris Garland Training as a digital PDF. This qualification remains valid for 3 years.
Course Prerequisites & Physical Demands
Using evacuation equipment involves significant manual handling on stairs. Please ensure all attendees meet these criteria before booking:
- Age & Language: Attendees must be at least 18 years old and have a good functional level of English (we recommend a GCSE Grade C or Level 2 baseline) to complete the theory and teaching assessments.
- Physical Fitness Restrictions: Because of the physical demands of moving equipment on stairs, this course is not suitable for individuals with active hernias, spinal or back problems, or upper-body injuries.
- Height & Weight Guidelines: To maintain safe mechanical leverage on a staircase, operators should ideally be between 5’5” and 6’2” in height, and weigh at least 9 stone (57kg) to handle the equipment safely.
- Required Clothing: All candidates must wear appropriate clothing (such as trousers) and flat, closed-toe shoes or boots. Skirts, high heels, or open footwear will result in immediate exclusion from the practical sessions.
Venues & Private Group Bookings
Our open, scheduled courses run at our dedicated training centre in Knutsford, Cheshire, where all six models are fully available for practice. Please review our Course Joining Instructions before your visit.
We can also deliver this course as a private session at your premises anywhere in the UK for a maximum of 8 candidates per instructor. Many organisations choose to run this back-to-back alongside our Evacuation Sledge Train the Trainer course to build total internal safety self-sufficiency. Very enjoyable. Apprehensive about using the chair but the training eased the concerns and have since provided some training.

Hi Mark, Thank you for your review. Look forward to seeing you on a course again soon. Best regards. Chris.

The course was interesting and informative. We were given good information regarding the different types of chair available and tried out three different designs during the practical which did highlight that all have their limitations, especially on narrow stairwells, and that all types require a team of two people to use them safely and facilitate the safe evacuation of the disabled person. The fact that the evac chair should be used as a ‘one person one way’ rescue device was also highlighted, so in many situations multiple chairs and two person operator teams will be required. A section on the requirement for maintenance and testing under PUWER was included.
The end of course assessment was a short but to the point, very similar in format to the asbestos awareness assessment. All in all a valuable course and quite enjoyable.
