Learning Disability Awareness | E-Learning
Learning disabilities are lifelong, varied and widely misunderstood. This course addresses all three.
A learning disability is a neurological condition that affects how a person understands and processes information, how they learn, and how they communicate. Learning disabilities are present from birth or develop in early childhood and are not the same as learning difficulties such as dyslexia, which affect specific skills without affecting overall intellectual development.
The range within the category of learning disability is wide. People with profound and multiple learning disabilities have very complex support needs, while others live independently with little or no formal support. Between those two points is enormous variation, which means that any assumptions about what a person with a learning disability can or cannot do, needs or wants, are likely to be wrong.
This CPD-approved online course introduces the different types and causes of learning disability, explains how they can affect individuals in different ways, and provides a framework for understanding what good support looks like, grounded in a person-centred approach and the relevant legal obligations.
What You Will Learn
- What a learning disability is, how it differs from a learning difficulty, and how it is diagnosed and defined
- The common types of learning disability, including Down’s syndrome, autistic spectrum conditions, fragile X syndrome, acquired brain injuries and others, and how each can present
- The causes of learning disabilities, including genetic, perinatal and environmental factors
- How learning disabilities can affect a person across different aspects of their life, including communication, social relationships, independence and mental health
- The person-centred approach applied to supporting people with learning disabilities: getting to know the individual, involving them in decisions, and building on their strengths
- The legal framework, including the Mental Capacity Act 2005, the Equality Act 2010 and the Care Act 2014, and what these mean for how support is planned and delivered
- Safeguarding people with learning disabilities: why this group faces a higher risk of abuse and neglect, and how to recognise and respond to concerns
