The course that gives your internal trainers the depth of knowledge the role demands.

Most evacuation chair training providers train on one or two models. We train on six. That difference matters more than it might appear.

An internal trainer who only knows one piece of kit is not equipped to conduct a meaningful equipment risk assessment, advise on PEEP requirements across a mixed estate, or confidently train staff who may encounter different chair types on different sites. Our Train the Trainer programme is designed to produce genuinely competent internal trainers, not just people who can demonstrate one specific chair.

This full-day course covers six different evacuation chair models, including the industry-standard Evac+Chair 300H and the versatile Ibex Transeat, alongside other commonly deployed chair types. Delegates leave with both the subject knowledge and the training delivery skills to run their own internal evacuation chair operator courses.

What You Will Learn

Subject knowledge

• The legal framework, including PUWER 1998, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, and the Equality Act 2010
• PEEP obligations: the employer’s duty, PEEP design principles and documentation
• Evacuation chair risk assessment across different building types and staircase configurations
• Annual service requirements and pre-use inspection protocols
• Equipment comparison: the six chair models covered, their mechanical differences, load capacities, deployment environments and maintenance considerations
• Disability awareness in an emergency context, covering communication, dignity and supporting diverse needs
• Manual handling principles specific to chair operation

Training delivery

• How adults learn, and the principles of effective practical skills training
• Planning and structuring a training session
• Managing different learner types and ability levels
• Conducting practical assessments and issuing certificates
• Record-keeping and training documentation
• How to keep in-house training current as guidance and equipment evolve

Course Details

Course Type:

• Practical, face to face training.
• Maximum of 8 candidates per course.

Certificate:

• Following successful completion of the course and assessments, you will receive the following course certificate from Chris Garland Training:
  • Evacuation Chair Train-the-Trainer Certificate.
• PDF certificates are issued as standard.
• Certificates valid for 3 years.

Time:

• Typically 09:00-17:00hrs.

Test:

• The training and assessment is undertaken in English. We recommend that you have at least GCSE grade C/Level 2 English & Maths before undertaking this course. This is not mandatory, so please contact us to discuss any reasonable adjustments that we can make to accommodate your needs.
• Each candidate will undertake a multiple-choice question paper & practical assessment.
  • Multiple-Choice Question paper: You need to score a minimum of 70% correct answers to achieve a pass.
  • Practical observation: Practical assessments throughout the course, including a practical teaching demonstration of part of the course

Pre-requisites:

• Prior experience of evacuation equipment use is not required.
• You will need a reasonable level of strength & fitness as there is a significant amount of manual handling involved in the use of evacuation equipment.
• Those with hernias, upper body, spinal or limb injuries should not undertake this training.
• You should be between approximately 5’5” & 6’2” in height – outside of this and you can’t operate evacuation equipment safely or comfortably.
• You should be between at least 9 stone in weight – operators need to have a minimum mass to be able to move evacuation equipment safely.
• You must wear appropriate clothing for the training (e.g.: trousers and flat shoes/boots)
• You must be at least 18 years old to undertake this course.

• This evacuation chair train the trainer course is available to candidates across the UK. We can deliver the course in other countries, but the protocols that we teach meet the current UK practice, protocols & guidance.
