Basic First Aid for Judo Coaches
Approved by British Judo, our Basic First Aid for Judo course is for existing and prospective Judo coaches who need to undertake a basic first aid course.
Following successful completion of the course and assessments, the learner will receive the following course certificate which is valid for 3 years:

Course syllabus includes:
- Health & Safety legislation with regards to first aid
- Understanding the role & responsibility of the first-aider, including:
- managing incidents
- gathering & using available equipment
- the importance of preventing cross infection
- the need for recording incidents and actions
- First aid kits & their contents
- How to assess an emergency situation in order to act safely, promptly and effectively
- Recognising & administering first aid to a casualty who is/has;
- unresponsive & breathing normally (recovery position)
- unresponsive & not breathing normally (CPR & use of Defibrillator)
- the difference between a heart attack and a cardiac arrest
- choking
- wounded and bleeding
- small cuts, grazes and bruises
- small splinters
- minor burns and scalds
- having a seizure
- suffering medical shock
- Concussion
- What is concussion & how does it affect us?
- Second Impact Syndrome
- Concussion guidance protocols & pitch-side assessment
- Graduated return to play protocols for adults
- Graduated return to school & play protocols for children
- Post-Concussion Syndrome
Course Times and Duration:
- The HSE state that for the course to be valid, your Emergency First Aid at Work course must be a minimum of 6 hours in duration. This includes the time allowed for the assessments and exam, but does not include for any coffee breaks.
- In addition to this, we cover around 1.5 hours learning on concussion.
- Please note: If you arrive more than 15 minutes late for any day of the course, you will be turned away and will forfeit your place on the course and any monies paid.

Test:
- Your practical assessment is where you demonstrate giving first aid as you would in an emergency situation. This will include providing CPR to a training manikin on the floor.
- You will also undertake a multiple-choice question paper.

Pre-requisites for Basic First Aid for Judo Course:
| Who could attend: | • The course is aimed at those over 16 who are looking to undertake the responsibilities associated with being a nominated first aider. • The course can be undertaken by candidates between 14 & 16 years old, but they shouldn’t be relied upon to be the sole, nominated first aider. |
| Education: | • We recommend that you have a minimum of GCSE English & Maths at grade D/Level 1 (or equivalent) before undertaking this course. • This is not mandatory – please contact us to discuss any reasonable adjustments to accommodate your needs (e.g Dyslexia). |
| Prior knowledge: | • You don't need to have any prior knowledge of the subject, but if you do, that's great. We cover everything that you need to know as part of the training course. |
| Physical ability: | • You must be physically able to demonstrate first aid procedures as they would occur in a real life. • As part of your assessment you will be required to provide CPR to a casualty (manikin) who is on the floor. |
Candidates:
| General: | • All classroom courses have a minimum and maximum number of candidates that we can take on a course. |
| Minimum: 6 candidates | • We need a minimum of 6 candidates for the course to run. • Where fewer than 6 are booked on to the course, we will cancel the course 48 hours before it is due to start. • In this unlikely case, we will contact you to discuss transferring your booking to another date or to issue a refund. |
| Maximum: 12 candidates | • For most courses we are limited by the Health & Safety Executive, and (where applicable) by the Awarding Organisation, to a maximum of 12 candidates per instructor. • If you have more than 12 candidates to undertake this training, you may prefer to arrange several private bookings.
