Ladder and Step Ladder Inspection Training | Formal Inspection

Every equipment user should perform a quick visual check before using access hardware. However, the Work at Height Regulations 2005 go much further. Specifically, Regulation 12 places strict legal duties on employers and self-employed operators. Therefore, you must carry out formal inspections of all work ladders at regular intervals.

These equipment checks must also occur immediately after initial installation setups. Furthermore, exceptional circumstances affecting safety require immediate secondary inspections. Consequently, these formal compliance reviews track wear, structural damage, and corrosion. A designated competent person must perform these checks.

In addition, companies must keep the resulting condition reports on file continuously. We believe online training tracks cannot build true physical inspection competence. Therefore, our practical course provides vital face-to-face guidance using real equipment.

What You Will Learn

Our targeted half-day syllabus focuses heavily on statutory compliance and hazard identification. Specifically, the training modules cover these essential fields:

  • Legal Frameworks: Reviewing Regulation 12 safety duties alongside PUWER 1998 and RIDDOR reporting requirements.
  • Competence Standards: Understanding what competent person means legally and demonstrating that status effectively.
  • Check Categorisation: Distinguishing clearly between baseline pre-use checks and formal statutory equipment inspections.
  • Structural Points: Inspecting stiles, rungs, treads, feet, locking mechanisms, spreader bars, rivets, and welds.
  • Defect Identification: Recognising degradation, heavy wear, metallic corrosion, and chemical contamination accurately.
  • Incident Triggers: Identifying exceptional circumstances that necessitate immediate out-of-schedule equipment reviews.
  • Report Generation: Completing formal inspection logs, recording defects, and meeting mandatory data retention timelines.
  • Quarantine Decisions: Determining exactly when to remove defective climbing hardware from active workplace service.

Prerequisites and Safety Candidate Caps

Candidates must be at least 18 years old to undertake this safety qualification. Meanwhile, we recommend a baseline background of GCSE Grade C literacy or equivalent. We conduct all technical instructions and reporting exercises strictly in English. Therefore, delegates require a clear understanding of the language to complete the coursework.

Please contact us before booking to discuss arranging any necessary reasonable adjustments. Open public sessions require a minimum of four candidates to run successfully. However, private corporate bookings have no minimum candidate thresholds. Health and safety regulations limit capacities to a maximum of twelve delegates per instructor.

If you have larger cohorts, we easily arrange additional instructors to maintain compliance. Please connect with our team directly to coordinate expanded dates.
