Introduction to Dementia Awareness | E-Learning
Dementia is not a single condition. Understanding the differences changes how you support someone.
Dementia is a chronic, progressive impairment of brain function. It affects cognition, memory, behaviour and the ability to carry out everyday tasks. Crucially, it does not affect everyone in the same way. The type of dementia, the part of the brain affected, and the stage of progression all influence how a person presents and what kind of support is most useful.
For anyone working with or caring for someone living with dementia, this is not an academic distinction. It is the foundation of effective, respectful support. A response that works well for a person with Alzheimer’s disease may be entirely wrong for someone with vascular dementia or Lewy body dementia. Understanding these differences, and knowing how to adapt, is what good dementia-aware practice looks like.
This CPD-approved online course provides a clear, accessible overview of the common types of dementia, how each affects the brain, and what this means for the people who care for or work alongside those living with the condition.
