Introduction to Duty of Care | E-Learning
Every care worker has a duty of care. Not everyone fully understands what it means in practice.
The duty of care is the legal and professional obligation of all health and social care organisations and workers to put the interests and wellbeing of service users first. It applies in every interaction, across every setting, at every level of seniority. However, knowing that you have a duty of care is not the same as understanding how it shapes day-to-day decisions, how to navigate situations where competing responsibilities create a dilemma, or what to do when a service user makes a complaint.
This CPD-approved online course provides an accessible, practical introduction to duty of care for anyone working in health or social care. It moves from the definition of the concept through to its real-world application, including the dilemmas that arise most frequently in practice and the support and advice available when things are not clear-cut.
What You Will Learn
- What duty of care means in the context of health and social care, and where it comes from legally and professionally
- The implications of duty of care for how you conduct yourself in your role, including your obligations to act, to report and to escalate
- How duty of care affects your day-to-day work: the decisions it shapes, the standards it sets, and the behaviours it requires
- Duty of care dilemmas: the situations where competing obligations, such as a service user’s right to autonomy versus their safety, create genuine tension
- How to resolve dilemmas: where to seek support and advice, and who to involve
- How to respond to complaints: the principles of a fair, proportionate complaint response and your role within it
