This award aims to provide Childcare (Early Years) Practitioners with an awareness of what constitutes appropriate well-balanced nutrition for young children aged 0-5yrs. It includes approaches to developing and planning healthier meals for young children in a professional or volunteer childcare setting. Relevant settings include day nurseries, childcare centres, child-minders, play centres, pre-school clubs and all other institutions catering for young children including hospitals and residential centres (professional, not-for-profit and volunteer settings). This unit is also appropriate for those working in health and social care and education sectors and those tasked with the promotion of food products and services to young children and their parents/guardians.

The award is designed to develop an awareness and understanding of the important role that well balanced nutrition plays in the health, development, and well-being of young children, and the associated need for well-planned and well-managed nutritionally appropriate catering. Based on the nationally recognised syllabus and legal and professional standards, this award covers the basic principles of nutrition which underpin the production of healthy food, the effect that nutrition has on the health and well-being, and how to plan and prepare nutritionally balanced and appropriate food including special diets in an early years setting. It is co-authored and co-presented by Dr Mabel Blades (PhD. A. Dip. PRPH Nutr, BSc Hons, SRD, DMS, MPhil, MIFST, MBA, RSH), an acclaimed nutritional Author, Advisor and Academic.

This flexible online video-based course follows the approved UK Nutritional Awareness (Healthier eating & special diets) syllabus, and is filmed on-location in a commercial kitchen setting.

Nutritional Awareness and Menu Planning Early Years Course syllabus includes:

  • Introduction to Nutrition, important terms and definitions.
  • Fluids – The importance of fluids, defining dehydration, fluids & energy.
  • Energy – Requirements for energy for a range of age groups.
  • Carbohydrates & Fibre – The roles of carbohydrates and fibre in the body.
  • Protein – Introduction, human protein requirements, proteins in foods, vegetarians & vegans.
  • Fats – Visible and invisible fats, different types of fat, Omega 3 fats.
  • Micronutrients, Vitamins & Minerals – Vitamins A, B, C & D, minerals, Iron, Calcium, Zinc.
  • Providing a balanced diet – The Eatwell Guide, meat, fish, eggs, beans and other non-dairy sources of protein, milk and dairy foods.
  • Allergies and intolerances – legal considerations, 14 named allergens, Coeliac Disease, HACCP.
  • Service considerations for Early Years Settings.
